The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that two elementary students have won First Place in PennDOT’s 2009 School Bus Safety Poster Contest. The theme of this year’s contest “Cross in View, it’s the Right Thing To Do” stressed the need for students to stay in view of the bus driver and be cautious when a bus is loading or unloading passengers. First, Second and Third Place winners in four Divisions were recognized at a ceremony held at the State Capitol. The ceremony launched School Bus Safety Week, as proclaimed by Governor Edward G. Rendell.
Bradford Woods Elementary student Eric Mole won First Place Division I (Grades Kindergarten–2) and Hosack Elementary student Joie Feng won First Place Division II (Grades 3–5). Eric and Joie were entered in the State-level competition after being selected District Finalists. As First Place State winners, their entries will now be forwarded to a National competition to be judged next month.

All of these students were recognized by the North Allegheny School District’s Superintendent of Schools, Patricia P. Green, Ph.D., at a special luncheon and ceremony held in their honor during the District’s Health and Safety Meeting on October 20, 2009.

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that the North Allegheny Senior High School has recently received notification that the 2009 Safari yearbook has been selected as a new addition to Walsworth Publishing’s online Cover Gallery.
The Cover Gallery is a display of unique covers designed by customers and/or Walsworth’s Creative Services Department. The 2009 Safari was selected because of the outstanding creative quality it reflects and because Walsworth believes it will be of educational benefit to other students across the country as a reference.
The cover of the 2009 Safari yearbook was designed by NASH students under the guidance of Yearbook Advisors Ms. Jeanne Giampetro and Ms. Fran Bogos.

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that Raven Clifton has been named an Outstanding Participant in the 2010 National Achievement® Scholarship Program, an academic competition for Black American high school students.
Raven is one of approximately 4,700 high school seniors whose 2008 PSAT scores are among the top three percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested entry to the 2010 National Achievement Program. Her name is included in a roster of Outstanding Participants being referred to about 1,500 U.S. colleges and universities.
The National Achievement Program was initiated in 1964 to honor academically-able black youth throughout the nation and provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition. The program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance.

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that the North Allegheny Senior High School has recently received two prestigious recognitions by the National Forensic League (NFL).
The District was notified that the NASH speech and debate program achieved 300 degrees or more during the last school year, placing it in the top 1% of NFL chapters nationwide, which and qualifies it for the NFL Societe’ De 300. This award is intended to recognize programs that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to teaching essential life skills such as communication, research, listening, writing, and organization.
Additionally, the District has received notification that NASH has been recognized – for the third year in a row – as one of the nation’s “Top 100 Schools” in speech and debate activities by the National Forensic League. NASH ranked 90 out of over 3,000 schools nationwide. This recognition was awarded to NASH and published nationwide in the Rostrum, the national magazine of high school speech and on www.nflonline.org, the website of the National Forensic League.
The National Forensic League is the nation’s oldest and largest high speech and debate honor society. Its mission is to promote secondary school speech and debate activities and interscholastic competition as a means to develop a student’s lifelong skills and values, as well as the public’s awareness of the value of speech, debate, and communication education. To date, over 1.3 million alumni have found their voice in the National Forensic League.

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) Student Assistance Program is sponsoring their annual fall Community Connections Seminar on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the North Allegheny Intermediate High School Auditorium, 350 Cumberland Road, McCandless.
The topic of this year’s seminar will be “Do You and Your Child Know the Potential Consequences of Electronic Communications?” This timely and informative session is geared for parents and students in grades 4–10. This seminar is open to the community and is free of charge.
ACT 48 credits will be provided for educational professionals who attend. For more information, please call the Student Assistance Office at 412-369-5466.

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) announces that “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” will be presented at North Allegheny Intermediate High School (NAI) on October 22 and 24, 2009. (The performance schedule is included below.) NAI is located at 350 Cumberland Road in McCandless Township.
Performances are scheduled for:
Wednesday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. – Special Senior Citizen Performance*
Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 24 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

NA School Board to Meet Twice in October
The North Allegheny School District (NASD) announces that the Board of School Directors will meet twice in the month of October.
The Board will hold a Work Session Meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. This meeting will be preceded by a Distinguished Achievement Awards Ceremony. The Board will hold their Regular Meeting on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Both meetings will be held in the Board Room of the Central Administration Offices, 200 Hillvue Lane, McCandless Township, and will begin at 7:00 p.m.

North Allegheny School District is the largest suburban school district in Allegheny County. It is located approximately twelve miles north of Pittsburgh and serves the municipalities of Bradford Woods Borough, Franklin Park Borough, Marshall Township and the Town of McCandless – a total of 48 square miles. Much of the District is suburban-residential. New housing developments and transferees moving into the area help maintain a steady enrollment. In 2009-2010, the total enrollment was 8,064 students in twelve schools.
