NA Announces Finalist in the 2009 National Achievement® Scholarship Program

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that Kendra Calhoun has been selected as a Finalist in the 2009 National Achievement® Scholarship Program, an academic competition for Black American high school students.

More than 150,000 Black American students took the 2007 PSAT/NMSQT and requested consideration in the 2009 National Achievement Program.  About 1,600 students were named Semifinalists on the basis of their Selection Index scores (the sum of critical reading, math, and writing skills scores).  Semifinalists are the highest scorers in the states within each region and will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for over 800 Achievement Scholarship® awards.

The National Achievement Program was initiated in 1964 to honor academically-able Black American youth throughout the nation and provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition.  The program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance.

NA Superintendent is First Recipient of Clarence A. Newell Award

from University of Maryland

Dr Patricia P. Green, Superintendent of Schools

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that Dr. Patricia P. Green, Superintendent of Schools, was recently honored as the first recipient of the Clarence A. Newell Award for Distinguished Service to Public Education from the University of Maryland.  The award was presented to Dr. Green as a part of the 243rd Commencement Ceremony of the College of Education at the University on December 21, 2008.

This Award was established as a tribute to Dr. Clarence A. Newell, Professor Emeritus of Educational Administration at the University of Maryland, who taught in the College of Education from 1946 through 1981. The purpose of the award is to honor Dr. Newell’s significant contributions to the field of public education and is designed to be awarded to individuals who continue his distinguished legacy.  Dr. Newell is known for having been experimental in his teaching, with emphasis on human relationships in administrations.

Dr. Newell was also in demand as a consultant for many groups, including the School of Medicine at the University of Florida, the Graduate Program of Business Administration at Georgetown University and the Oceanographic Office of the U.S. Oceanic Administration.  He is the author of five books and approximately 60 articles and research reports.  He is currently working on an autobiography.

Dr. Green earned all three of her professional degrees at the University of Maryland.  In 1971, she began her professional career as an elementary school teacher in Prince George’s County, teaching in both Buckingham School and Bladensburg School until 1983.  She was then appointed principal of Columbia Park Elementary School, where her ‘can do’ attitude helped transform it from one of the lowest achieving schools in the country to a national award-winning institution.  A former Area Assistant Superintendent (1991-1995) and Chief Divisional Administrator for Pupil Services of Prince George’s County Public Schools, Dr. Green also worked with the U.S. Department of Education on formulating Strong Families, Strong Schools: Building Community Partnerships for Learning (1994).

Dr. Green became Superintendent of Schools for the North Allegheny School District in June 2002.  During her tenure, the District has garnered state and national recognition for premiere achievement in academics, the arts, and athletics.

“The experience of being selected as the recipient of this first Award has been very meaningful to me,” Dr. Green said. “As Dr. Newell’s student in the graduate studies program, I was both inspired and motivated by him.  As the recipient of this honor, I am humbled and deeply gratified to have the opportunity represent all that he worked so hard to develop as his personal legacy. My career in public education has been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence on behalf of children and I am honored to be recognized in this way. ”

NA Announces Kindergarten Registration

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) announces that Kindergarten Registration will be held on January 28, 2009.  Registration will be held at each of the elementary schools during the day from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  A District-wide evening registration will also occur on January 28 at Peebles Elementary School ONLY from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

A review of the following documents is necessary before any child can be registered for kindergarten. Parents are asked to bring them when they come to register on January 28:

·        child’s birth certificate (student must be 5 by September 1, 2009),

·        child’s immunization record

·        proof of residency

Medical forms must be returned to a student’s assigned school prior to the first day of school; it is not necessary to complete the forms for registration.  Parents are asked to pay close attention to immunization requirements, as these must be met prior to the first day of school.

Parents may come to any elementary building to register their child for kindergarten.  When students are registered, parents may indicate their preference for AM/PM kindergarten.  However, the assignment of students to AM/PM classes will not be done on a first come, first served basis.  Building principals will assign children to AM/PM kindergarten using both class size guidelines and the preferences marked on the registration forms.

If the principal cannot assign all students to their parents’ preferred kindergarten session, a lottery will be conducted in that building by randomly drawing names for the AM/PM sections.  More information about this 'Lottery System' can be obtained in any elementary school office.

NA Students take Second Place in Chain Reaction Contraption Contest

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that a team of students from the North Allegheny Intermediate (NAI) High School placed 2nd in the Chain Reaction Contraption Contest.  Team members were Jonathan Timcheck, Daniel Lesh, Tyler Abbs and Shane Smith

The Chain Reaction Contraption Contest (CRCC) is a spirited competition for students in grades 9-12 and is held in conjunction with National Engineers Week. The CRCC fosters an interest in engineering by challenging students to create a machine that will accomplish a specific task using a series of steps. The CRCC is sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Company, and presented in cooperation with the Carnegie Science Center and the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania.

This year’s challenge was to build a machine that would wrap or unwrap a present in 20 steps or more.  Teams were required to submit a preliminary design drawing, provide a series of progress photos to show the machine’s evolution, build a machine that accomplishes the assigned task and demonstrate their machine and make a verbal presentation.

The NAI students began working on their device in August under the advisement of Ms. Sherri Fochler, gifted program teacher, and Mr. Stephen Reed, a volunteer from Westinghouse.  The team successfully completed the challenge by creating a machine that takes 30 steps and 45 seconds to wrap or unwrap a present.
