NA Students Awarded NMSC Finalist Status
The North Allegheny School District (NASD) proudly announces that the National Merit® Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has named eleven students Finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Each of the students has received a Certificate of Merit for meeting all the requirements to be named a Finalist and will be considered for National Merit Scholarships, which will be offered in the upcoming months. Finalist students are:
Stacey Chen Kevin Liu Michael Sinko
Mike Heckmann Katherine Luo Nimish Telang
Andrew Ho Dakota McCoy Kristen Yealy
Emily Li Elaine Oestreich
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.
Before they can be considered for Merit Scholarship awards, semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements that include having an outstanding academic record, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and submitting SAT scores that confirm their earlier PSAT/NMSQT performance. Other information evaluated includes the student’s educational interest and goals, as well as participating and leadership in school and community activities.

NA Student Selected for PMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble
The North Allegheny School District (NASD) is proud to announce that Nick Amoscato, junior tenor saxophone player in the North Allegheny Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I, has been accepted by audition into the PMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble as lead tenor.
To determine which students will participate in this elite group, the PMEA All-State Jazz committee determines a set of audition materials that students must perform on a DVD and submit to PMEA. From these DVDs, the All-State Jazz Band is picked. There is no guaranteed representation on this ensemble, which ensures that only best high school musicians will be accepted. A maximum of only two tenor saxophone players from the entire state are chosen – making this an even more noteworthy accomplishment.
The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) is an affiliate of the 65,000 member Music Educators National Conference (MENC). PMEA is a service organization dedicated to music education in the Commonwealth.
