Diversity

In March, 2008, Dr. Patricia P. Green, the Superintendent of Schools, announced that the Unity/ Diversity Committee would be renamed the

                                  “Marcia Martin Unity/Diversity Committee”

Dr. Green proposed this change at the School Board meeting of March 16, 2008, when the sixth annual Diversity Report was presented to the community.  She explained that Dr. Marcia Martin, a former Principal of Carson Middle School, was instrumental in the establishment in the Diversity Committee and also initiated groundbreaking work on Gender Equity in the District.  The Board was very much in favor of this tribute.

Dr. Martin recently passed away after a long illness and the addition of her name to the Unity/Diversity Committee name would commemorate her vision and efforts to further advance the issues of tolerance, harmony and equality in all areas across the District.

2007-2008 Unity/Diversity Committee Honors Contest Winners

The North Allegheny School District's Unity/Diversity Expression Committee has announced the winners of the annual contest.  Entries were accepted from November 19 through December 14. The event was open to all students in the District, grades K-12.  The contest provided students with an opportunity to express their interpretation of the theme: "Each one of us is wonderful; together we are diverse and strong. Help make NA a place where everyone knows they belong."

Students chose this year  to express their thoughts on this concept by using written form through poems and an essay  - - as well as the fine arts portion with paintings, multi-media, a crayon drawing and a musical score.

All ten of the winners were honored and asked to share their entries at the Annual NA Diversity Luncheon on Tuesday, February 5th, hosted by Dr. Patricia P. Green, Superintendent of Schools.  Dr. Green welcomed the student winners whose talents continue to amaze and impress the District by embracing  the ideas brought forth through this fine arts competition.  Pictured below are the 2007-2008 winners!
